About the artist
Chelsea Art School textile design graduate Emma Cowlam produces hand stitched and hand-drawn, original illustrations from a personally-developed and unique sewing technique. She takes inspiration from fashionable and stylish images gleaned throughout her daily life and transforms them into classic designs.
+
As well as being internationally exhibited and sold, Emma’s illustrations have featured in publications such as Elle, Elle Decoration, Living Etc, Artist & Illustrators, Glamour and Country Homes & Interiors. In September 2011, Emma produced a bespoke collection for Victoria & Albert Museum, London. In February 2012, she launched at Liberty, London.
Emma’s life long fascination with beautiful image has led her to recording her experiences visually. She became passionate about illustration whilst at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan, New York, and it was here where she developed and refined her personal illustration technique and style. Her strength lies in the clever combination of traditional drawing and sewing skills that can be manipulated to suit the digital age.
