About the Artist

Caroline Hall studied for a BA in Visual Art and an MA in Painting at Winchester School of Art. Often using video as a springboard, Caroline's paintings explore landscapes that are on the move.  From digital pixels layered one on top of the other, to a filmed journey on London's circle line her works show images that are glimpsed and fragmented, flickering across the surface of aluminium and canvas. In 2009, she was named by emerging artist specialists Degree Art as an Artist to Watch. She has exhibited all over Europe with residencies in Utrecht and Winchester Cathedral.

In Caroline’s words: "The tube journey series began life as a random film shot with my phone on London Underground's Circle Line. I take one frame from the video as a starting point and develop the painting from that split second image. These works represent a flash of landscape, not one you would normally notice from the train but one that can have its own unique beauty. Cement, bricks, pipework and cables when the train comes above ground. A flash of colour as the train arrives at the station. The aluminium base is an integral part of the work; sometimes I leave a border unpainted as a reference to film, other times I scratch back into the surface with a sharp tool to reference the flashes of metal on the underground."
